Racism: “prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.”

While it may be human nature to perceive “differences,” making assumptions and decisions based on those perceptions, is contrary to our Christian beliefs in a holistic society. We are called to work with others in breaking down and eradicating racism where we find it — whether in ourselves, our organizations, or the world around us.

Corporate Stance

Our Corporate Stance on Racism

Living our Christian belief that all people are created in the image of God, the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul of the United States and Canada adopt a unified stance affirming the dignity and human rights of all persons and eradicating racism in ourselves, the communities we serve and our countries as a whole.

We will do this by . . .

  1. Pledging to:
    • Promote heightened awareness of language, attitudes, assumptions, and behaviors that support negative stereotypes and denigrate the dignity of others
    • Affirm the values of diversity and inclusion in our communities and institutions
    • Act to recognize and change the structures that support racism and separate groups of people
    • Stand up in the presence of racism
    • Pray for peace and healing among all people
    • Welcome persons of diversity into our Daughter of Charity communities
  2. Advocating for legislation which:
    • Affirms civil rights for all and eliminates discrimination based on race.
    • Promotes just and fair access to housing, education, health care, employment and voting rights, and the criminal justice system.
  3. Contributing to dialogue on the local, regional and national level to create energy toward positive change.
