Laudato Si’ Action Platform Commitment

The Daughters of Charity
of the Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton,
inspired by the Gospel of Jesus and by St. Vincent and St. Louise, are
urged by the love of Christ crucified
rooted in the Vincentian charism
bound together by community life and prayer,
sent to serve Christ in persons who are poor in a spirit of
humility, simplicity & charity.

Faithful to our charism and inspired by our Corporate Stance on the Environment,
we hear the urgent call to respond to the cry of Earth,
named by Pope Francis, “the poorest of the poor.”
We commit to participate in the Laudato Sí’ Action Platform
and to develop and implement a Laudato Si’ Action Plan.

We commit to growing in our understanding of Integral Ecology and
“how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor,
commitment to society, and interior peace.” (Pope Francis)

We commit to integrating each of the Seven Laudato Si’ Goals into our Action Plan
so that our lives, communities, and ministries are transformed by growth in integral ecology.

We commit to deepening our Ecological Conversion,
by broadening our education for ourselves and others on the current environmental crisis.
We commit to taking concrete actions individually and as a community
to bring healing to Earth, to end the misuse of creation,
and to call on our nation’s leaders to bring about lasting environmental changes.

We recognize there are ecological limits to the use of Earth’s resources.
We commit to live simply and to use the gifts of creation with awareness, care, and gratitude.

As Daughters of Charity we commit to joining the Global Church and our Global Community,
to grow daily in our choices so that we honor and respect the smallest creatures
and all our sisters and brothers that we may all share in the glory of God’s creation.

Poem to Mother Nature

Sights, Sounds, Cold, Rain Snow Storm, Cold house

Wintry unstable

Windy arms pushing against trees

Toppling giants, toppling the old drought starved

Roots give way to wind and water

Snow along the Grape Vine…mountain freeway bombarded

Snow as low as 1000 feet…WARNINGS, CAUTION

CHAOS if not careful

MOTHER NATURE lashes out once again

Not just on the West Coast but covers two thirds

Of the USA

EATING UP, DEVOURING, TORMENTING, DESTROYING

We have made MOTHER NATURE our ENEMY

How do we undo the harm we have caused and are causing HER?

HOW DO WE MAKE AMENDS?

St. Vincent Meals on Wheels combined Earth Day with Volunteer Week. Singapore Airlines employees donated three days of their time and talent to help our own volunteers with our Earth Day Planting Project. Two local nurseries donated plants and planting materials. Volunteers cleaned, prepared and planted all around our facility. The landscape at both St. Vincent Meals on Wheels and Hotel Dieu has been refreshed with beautiful new blooming plants, shrubs and a few trees.  Staff members were able to select a plant to take home to care for, or plant onsite to nurture as it grows. It was such a beautiful week!

We are excited to share our efforts to promote sustainable practices and celebrate the beauty of the natural environment within our ministries in honor of Earth Day 2024 at St. Vincent’s Children’s Center and the Fr. Virgil Cordano Center.  St. Vincent’s is proud to play a role in protecting the environment and promoting responsible stewardship of natural resources.

The children and their guardians from St. Vincent’s Children’s Center helped beautify our community by collecting trash at the local park. The children learned about the importance of environmental protection and what individuals can do to keep our cities and neighborhoods clean and beautiful.

At the Fr. Virgil Cordano Center, our dedicated volunteers replaced single-use plastic bags with resusable paper bags for distributing breakfasts and lunches to our clients. This is a significant step in reducing plastic use in our community and protecting the environment from pollution caused by ubiquitous plastic products.
